The Greenwood Community

Considering the number of people building homes in the Greenwood area today for the purpose of vacationing and future retirement, it comes as no surprise that the first residence was built here in 1823 by John McGehee, Jr. as a summer home for him and his bride.

This 600-acre plantation was named Green Wood by McGehee's wife, Charlotte. This area today, called Green Wood Village, located in the East Cambridge Avenue area, is one of Greenwood's most historic neighborhoods.

Early Greenwood was considered a healthful place to live. Many of its first residents, including the McGehees, moved here for that reason. Perhaps this early influence helped propel Greenwood and Self Regional Healthcare into becoming the regional center for health care services that it is today.

When the first railroad came through in 1852, it moved the center of the village to its present-day location since stores and business began to locate around the depot. This marked the initial development of the "widest Main Street in the world" and the Square, now referred to as Uptown Greenwood. The Emerald Triangle offers residents and visitors a new area full of culture and commerce in the Uptown area.

Throughout Greenwood's history, the one thing that has remained constant is the community's commitment to quality living. If you ask any of the businesses and industries why they are here, they will remark on the beauty of the area, the people, and the quality of life.

Lake Greenwood is just a few miles from the city limits of Greenwood and has become a very desirable place to live. There is housing on and near the lake that is as varied as that closer into town. New developments are springing up everywhere along the lake and there are many older ones as well. Greenwood's lake has also become a venue for numerous special events including triathlons, recreational sports, and fishing tournaments.

No matter where you are in the Greenwood area, you will find unlimited opportunities to enjoy its beauty, hospitality, and Southern charm.
